Planting Seeds of Tomorrow: Nurturing Life Plans and Dreams at YMCA Colombia

The true measure of a community isn’t found in its buildings or infrastructure, but in the strength and hope it instills in its youth. Driven by this belief, a team of 22 Dialecticians from Bogotá embarked on a meaningful journey to Hogar “Yo Amo La Vida”—a sanctuary managed by YMCA Colombia, nestled in Altos de Cazuzá, one of the most vulnerable areas of the capital. What we discovered was far more than a facility: it was a thriving ecosystem of resilience, where young people are actively shaping their futures with courage and determination.
Charting the Course: Tools for a Life Plan
Our visit was guided by a profound purpose: to share and provide the teenagers with tools to help them make their life plan. This crucial intervention. We went deeper than just talking, focusing on practical exercises designed to help them envision their goals, identify their potential, and chart a clear course forward.
We recognize that planning for the future requires more than just logic; it demands a strong emotional footing. Therefore, a core component of our day involved offering emotional accompaniment and support. Our team focused on creating a safe, judgment-free space for open dialogue. We emphasized the importance of self-care, resilience, and recognizing their inherent worth. Through guided discussions and individual check-ins, we aimed to plant seeds of confidence and ensure they felt seen, heard, and valued in their journey toward personal growth.
“Taking these kinds of actions means being able to give back a little to the community for all the blessings life gives me,” said Sergio Mejía, one of the Dialecticans who volunteered at the event. “Knowing that I am contributing my bit to the future of these teenagers is priceless.”
The day was this great mix of getting serious things done and just having fun. We did all the hard planning and emotional sharing, but then we'd break it up with spontaneous games and laughs. Whether it was competitive group stuff or just sharing meals, the energy was high and everyone connected easily. It was a true give and take: we shared our advice, and the teenagers gave us something even better, a powerful dose of pure, honest hope.
Leaving a Bit of Our Heart Behind
As the sun set and our visit drew to a close, the true impact of the day became evident. It was clear that between games and laughter, we left a bit of our heart there, invested in the destiny of every teenager we met.
The spirit of the Hogar Yo amo La Vida is a testament to the life-changing work of YMCA Colombia. We departed with full hearts, inspired by the power of presence and the unshakable belief that, with the right tools and emotional support, every young life can blossom into a future filled with promise.
